Musk's political money: at least $288 million in 2024, and a new wave for the 2026 midterms
FEC-based tallies put Musk's 2024 election spending at $259 million (Reuters, Dec 2024) and at least $288 million (Washington Post, Jan 2025); separate 2026 midterm tallies range from $366 million to more than $445 million.

What happened
Elon Musk was the largest known individual political donor of the 2024 election and is likely to be the largest in 2026 as well [2][3]. Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings released on December 5, 2024 showed he had given $259 million to groups supporting Donald Trump's 2024 campaign [1]. A Washington Post analysis of the year-end filings published on January 31, 2025 raised that figure to at least $288 million for Trump and other Republican candidates [2]. The two tallies cover the same election and should not be added together; the Post figure is the later, fuller count [2][1].
For the 2026 midterms, Reuters reported on October 12, 2026 that Musk had spent roughly $366 million so far, including $276 million since July, to help Republicans keep control of Congress [3]. A pre-general-election report filed with the FEC on October 22, 2026 showed Musk gave his super PAC, America PAC, more than $76 million in the first two weeks of October alone [5]. WIRED's analysis of FEC filings put his total giving to Republican groups this cycle at more than $445 million [5]. CNN reported on October 26, 2026 that his disclosed giving had passed the $400 million mark as of mid-October, with the election not yet over [6].
Why it matters
The giving coincides with Musk's companies holding large federal contracts and facing congressional scrutiny [7]. House Democrats have called for investigations into SpaceX's government contracts and Musk's work running the Department of Government Efficiency [3]. CNBC reported on October 22, 2026 that SpaceX had received at least $6.78 billion in federal work through October 1 of this year, according to the contract-tracking firm FedScout, and that Democratic control of either chamber could bring subpoenas and investigations into Musk's businesses [7]. Political donations are lawful, and the record here is about scale and timing, not proof of any transaction.
The evidence
The FEC's own committee page for America PAC (committee C00879510) shows total receipts of $215,977,673.63 and total disbursements of $171,687,764.50 for the period January 1, 2025 to October 14, 2026, with $46,512,557.52 cash on hand [4]. That figure covers only America PAC; Musk also gives to other Republican committees, which is why news-organization tallies of his total giving are higher than the America PAC receipts alone [5][6].
WIRED reported that America PAC spent nearly $43 million in the first two weeks of October, with $15.2 million in the Texas Senate race, including $12.4 million against Democrat James Talarico and $2.8 million supporting Republican Ken Paxton [5]. CNN reported that in September Musk gave $158 million in two tranches to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main Republican Senate super PAC, and that the money appeared to flow on to a group called Texas PAC that is backing Paxton [6]. The 2024 figures come from two separate FEC-based analyses: Reuters on December 6, 2024 ($259 million) and the Washington Post on January 31, 2025 (at least $288 million) [1][2].
Response and counterpoints
A spokesman for America PAC confirmed the $366 million breakdown to Reuters [3]. America PAC declined to comment to WIRED on the October 22 filing [5]. Supporters note that large donors on both sides fund super PACs and that Musk's spending has been disclosed through the FEC system as the law requires [4].
What remains uncertain
Do not add an earlier partial tally to a later total for the same period; the $259 million and $288 million figures describe the same 2024 cycle at different points in the reporting calendar [1][2]. Likewise the $366 million, more-than-$400 million and more-than-$445 million midterm figures are different organizations' counts at different dates using different sets of committees, not cumulative amounts [3][6][5]. The FEC data shown here runs only through October 14, 2026, so the final 2026 total will not be known until post-election reports are filed [4]. Political donations are not themselves proof of bribery or of a quantified return on investment. We could not retrieve the full text of the Reuters October 12 article today; only its headline and first four paragraphs were available [3].
Money and method
Entity: Elon Musk (personal contributions). Money type: political contributions to super PACs and other committees, as disclosed in FEC filings. Periods: 2024 cycle (actual, per FEC-based analyses of $259 million and at least $288 million) [1][2]; 2025-2026 cycle through mid-October 2026 (actual, with news tallies of $366 million, more than $400 million and more than $445 million, each on a different date and committee set) [3][6][5]. The America PAC receipts figure of $215.98 million is a committee total, not Musk's total giving [4].
